The Poems in Wood series spans decades.
Tim has been working in wood in one form or another as far back as he can remember. Many of these pieces start from wood he has found in his or friends' backyards, or wood a friend has given him. A lot of the time, a piece of wood will sit for months or years with it in Tim's peripheral vision in Tim's work spaces until, suddenly, it becomes clear what the sculpture is.
An example is Tall Ship, Deep Sea. The main piece of Russian Olive was a gift from a friend. It rested in plain view as a beautiful, mostly rectangular piece for a couple of years. One day, walking by, it was clear that it would be a tall ship ... the one you you see in a couple of the images below.
Oracle Bones, immediately above and below, is a similar story, but wood found in a garden from prunings. Oracle Bones also exemplifies Tim's interest in the tactile and story-telling nature of art, and his interest that people touch and interact with art as an important dimension of experiencing art beyond visuals.
